What is CRT?
CRT, or Corneal Reactive Therapy, is a form of orthokeratology that uses a unique rigid gas-permeable contact lens designed to correct myopia, or nearsightedness, by reshaping a patient’s cornea while they sleep. The advantage of CRT over traditional corrective lenses is that it may allow you to go through the day without wearing glasses or contacts at all.
How Does CRT Work?
The idea behind CRT is that over time, the rigid lens will reshape your cornea. For many, this is preferable to wearing corrective lenses throughout the day, every day. Some patients see results right away, while others must stick with the treatment for a while before seeing results.
Not everyone is a candidate for CRT. CRT can only be used in patients with healthy eyes. Before beginning CRT, our eye doctor will perform a comprehensive eye exam to see if you qualify. This helps our optometrist create a mold for your optical retainer which will be worn nightly to reshape your cornea. This is very similar to wearing a dental retainer to reshape teeth. As you wear the CRT lenses, our eye doctor will monitor your vision improvement progress through regular examination. Though some patients take longer than others to see results, CRT is generally very effective.
