What is Myopia Control

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia control involves treatments that are used to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. When you visit Lone Star Vision, our optometrist will perform a routine eye exam. Eye exams are an essential part of optometry care in Beaumont. Eye exams help reduce the risk of vision-threatening complications such as cataracts, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and blindness. Dr. Johnson will measure you or your child’s myopia and choose one of the four following treatment options:

  • atropine eye drops
  • multifocal contact lenses
  • multifocal eyeglasses
  • orthokeratology (ortho-k)

Myopia Control Treatments

Most eye doctors will recommend one of the four treatments listed above, but what are they? Let’s take a closer look at these treatment options and if you have any questions about myopia control, please contact us.

Atropine eye drops are used to reduce pain caused by eye inflammation. There have been reports showing that these eye drops are the most effective form of treatment, with a reduction in Myopia progression by up to 77 percent.

Multifocal contact lenses are designed to provide clear vision at distances for those who have refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism while experiencing presbyopia.

Multifocal eyeglasses are similar to multifocal contact lenses in that they help you with presbyopia so you can see clearly at all distances. They also work to slow down the progression of nearsightedness in children.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is also referred to as a corneal reshaping lens. These lenses are gas permeable contacts that you only wear while you're sleeping. The lenses are removed in the morning, and the temporary correction that they provide will help get you through the day.
